Each term, the work of our student dancers and upper level choreographers is showcased in public concerts presented as part of annual ongoing series:
York Dance Ensemble (YDE)
The Department’s repertory company, the YDE, which regularly premieres works by guest choreographers, faculty and students, and selectively remounts significant legacy works, offers upper-year BFA students pre-professional performance and production experience; membership in the YDE is by audition. The roster of recent guest YDE choreographers includes noted artists Debra Brown, Robert Glumbek, Keiko Kitano, Terrill Maguire, Andrea Nann and Yvonne Ng. Learn more about the YDE
York Dances culminates the term’s choreographic process for third-year BFAs. In an informal studio setting, student choreographers and dancers show the dances they have created.
Dance Innovations offers fourth year BFA choreography students the opportunity to move through all stages of creating and producing original choreography with full technical support. With guidance from the course director, students audition dancers, schedule rehearsals, create choreography, produce publicity materials, collaborate with student lighting designers, find music/musical support, costume and stage their pieces.
At the end of winter term, Senior Projects students present their self-designed and self-directed creative and academic research to faculty and students. Senior Projects, a capstone course for both BA and BFA students, offers upper-level students the opportunity to directly link their educational experiences to their post-graduation, professional lives.
